چکیده

The author came to lateral line research rather by chance, yet this sensory system ended up as the main focus of my entire scientific career. This paper is not a review article. Instead, it gives an overview some major topics that author, collaborators, and students have worked on for more than 4 decades. During last century, was mostly approached using mono-frequency water motions generated in still with stationary vibrating sphere. At beginning, approach necessary useful. studies, became apparent fish can only be fully understood if natural hydrodynamic stimuli (including noise) were applied. Better methods, like particle image velocimetry, are then needed systems. Finally, how biomimetic used investigate function discussed. In final paragraph, gaps hence, opportunities exist systems highlighted.

The Biophysics of the Fish Lateral Line

A distinctive feature of fishes is their ability to sense water flow with two types of receptors, called neuromasts, which are the functional units of the peripheral lateral line system. The superficial neuromasts (SNs) possess mechanosensory hair cells and project from the skin into the water at the body’s surface. This is similar to the flow-sensitive organs of amphibians (Kramer, 1933), ceph...

Source location encoding in the fish lateral line canal.

The position of a hydrodynamic dipole source, as encoded in a linear array of mechano-detecting neuromasts in the fish lateral line canal, was electrophysiologically investigated. Measured excitation patterns along the lateral line were compared to theoretical predictions and were found to be in good agreement. The results demonstrate that information on the position of a vibrating source from ...

Artificial lateral line with biomimetic neuromasts to emulate fish sensing.

Hydrodynamic imaging using the lateral line plays a critical role in fish behavior. To engineer such a biologically inspired sensing system, we developed an artificial lateral line using MEMS (microelectromechanical system) technology and explored its localization capability. Arrays of biomimetic neuromasts constituted an artificial lateral line wrapped around a cylinder. A beamforming algorith...

The Electrical Response of the Lateral Line System of Fish to Tone and Other Stimuli

1. The lateral line of Fundulus heteroclitus and Fundulus majalis is shown to react to tone at an intensity level of 20 dynes per sq. cm. at frequencies up to 200 or 300 cycles per second. 2. Evidence is given that the nerve can reproduce the stimulating tone frequency up to at least 180 cycles per second. 3. The response of the lateral line to the swimming movements of nearby fish is demonstra...

Wake tracking and the detection of vortex rings by the canal lateral line of fish.

Research on the lateral line of fish has mainly focused on the detection of oscillating objects. Yet many fish are able to track vortex wakes that arise from other fish. It is not yet known what the sensory input from a wake looks like and how fish can extract relevant information from it. We present a mathematical model to determine how vortices stimulate the canal lateral line and verify it b...
